Three things worth knowing
-
US + 10 = EU
A US or UK 38 is an EU 48; a 42 is an EU 52. The letter after it (S, R, L) is the length, not the width.
-
Why half the chest
European tailors measured the chest in centimeters and halved it, because a jacket is cut as two mirror-image fronts. The number is the width of one half.
-
Your chest is not your jacket
Measure your chest, not an old jacket: the size number is the body it fits, and the jacket itself is several inches bigger to move in.

Background
About suit sizes
A jacket size is a chest measurement. In the US and UK it is the chest in inches, so a 40 fits a 40-inch chest. In Europe and Italy it is half the chest in centimeters, so a 50 fits a 100 cm chest.
That makes the two systems ten apart: a US 40 is an EU 50.
