Three things worth knowing
-
Subtract 12 after noon
From 1300 onwards, take away 12 hours and add PM: 1300 is 1 PM, 2000 is 8 PM, 2330 is 11:30 PM.
-
One clock, no confusion
Armies, hospitals and airlines adopted the 24-hour clock because “8 o’clock” given in an order could mean two different times. Most of the world uses it every day.
-
12 AM is midnight
12:00 AM is 0000, the start of the day; 12:00 PM is 1200, noon. The 24-hour clock avoids the mix-up entirely.

Background
About military time
Military time counts the hours from 0000 at midnight to 2359, with no AM or PM and no colon: 0700 is 7 in the morning, 1900 is 7 in the evening. It is said “fourteen thirty” or “fourteen thirty hours”.
To convert an afternoon time, subtract 1200: 1645 − 1200 = 4:45 PM. Before noon, just add the colon and AM, dropping a leading zero: 0915 is 9:15 AM.
