Running pace converter
Convert between minutes per kilometer, minutes per mile and speed, then see what marathon time that pace works out to.
That's about the same as a typical parkrun. Held for a marathon, that finishes in about 3:31.
What it means
How quick is that?
Pace runs opposite to speed: a smaller number means you are going faster.

Three things worth knowing
-
Min/km to min/mile: add 60%
A mile is 1.609 km, so multiply your min/km pace by 1.6: 5:00 per km is about 8:03 per mile.
-
Why runners invert speed
On a run you want to know when you will reach the next marker, not how far you get in an hour. Time per distance answers that directly, and adds up along a route.
-
Faster means a smaller number
Improving from 6:00 to 5:30 per km is getting faster, even though the number went down. Pace charts confuse people for exactly this reason.

Background
About pace units
Runners measure time per distance, not distance per time. Minutes per kilometer is standard almost everywhere, minutes per mile in the US and UK, and swimmers count seconds per 100 m.
Because pace is the inverse of speed, converting means dividing rather than multiplying.
