Frame rate to frame time converter
Convert between frames per second, refresh rate in hertz and frame time in milliseconds or microseconds.
That's about the same as a standard monitor. Each frame stays on screen for 16.67 ms.
What it means
How smooth is that?
Frame time is the average. Stutter comes from frames that take longer than the rest, which an average frame rate hides.

Three things worth knowing
-
1000 ÷ fps = ms
30 fps is 33.3 ms, 60 fps 16.7 ms, 120 fps 8.3 ms, 240 fps 4.2 ms.
-
Why film is 24
Sound film needed one fixed speed in the late 1920s. 24 frames per second was the compromise between a clear soundtrack and the cost of film stock, and cinema never changed it.
-
Averages hide stutter
A game can average 60 fps and still feel rough if one frame in ten takes 50 ms. Benchmarks report the 1% lows for that reason.

About frame rate and frame time
Frame rate counts how many images appear each second; frame time is how long each one takes, and is the inverse. Game developers budget in milliseconds: at 60 fps everything has to be drawn in 16.67 ms.
Because of the inverse, gains shrink as the rate climbs. Going from 30 to 60 fps saves 16.7 ms per frame; from 144 to 240 saves only 2.8 ms.
