Acceleration converter
Convert between m/s², g-force and ft/s², and see how your figure compares with a lift, a sports car and a fighter jet.
That's about the same as Earth’s gravity. Kept up, that reaches 100 km/h in about 2.832 seconds.
What it means
How hard is that?
One g is the acceleration of gravity at the Earth’s surface, 9.80665 m/s² exactly.

Three things worth knowing
-
1 g is 10 m/s², near enough
Gravity is 9.81 m/s², so treating 1 g as 10 makes mental maths easy: 3 g is roughly 30 m/s².
-
Why pilots count in g
At 5 g your blood weighs five times as much and struggles to reach your brain. Measuring in g says immediately what a human can survive.
-
Acceleration is not speed
A car at a steady 200 km/h has zero acceleration. A car pulling away from traffic lights has plenty. Acceleration is the change, not the number on the speedometer.

Background
About acceleration units
Acceleration is how fast speed changes. The SI unit is m/s²: one meter per second, gained every second. Pilots, drivers and engineers prefer g, a multiple of Earth gravity, because the body feels it directly.
