Coffee to water ratio calculator
Find how much ground coffee to use for any amount of water, or how much water for the coffee you have. Pick your brew method.
That's 1.22× as much coffee as a double espresso, while a large mug is 1.01× more. At 1:16 that brews with 350 ml of water.
What it means
How much coffee is that?
Ratios are by weight; 1 ml of water weighs 1 g. A level tablespoon of medium-ground coffee is about 5 g and a standard scoop 10 g. Coffee-maker “cups” are 5 fl oz.

Three things worth knowing
-
60 g per liter
A good starting point for any method: 60 g of coffee per liter of water (1:16.7), then adjust to taste.
-
The golden cup
In the 1950s the Coffee Brewing Institute in the US tested what people liked best, and found it was about 55 g per liter. It is still the reference.
-
Cups are not mugs
A “cup” on a coffee maker is 5 fl oz (148 ml), not 8. A 12-cup carafe holds 1.8 liters.

Background
About coffee ratios
Coffee is brewed by ratio: grams of water for each gram of ground coffee. Pour-over is usually 1:16 (a 350 ml mug takes 22 g), the Specialty Coffee Association’s golden cup is about 1:18, a French press is stronger at around 1:12, and cold brew concentrate 1:8.
Weigh the coffee if you can: depending on the roast and grind, a tablespoon holds anywhere from 4 to 7 g.
