Inductance converter
Convert between henries, mH, µH and nH, the values on every coil, choke and switching regulator.
That's about the same as a mains choke. With a 100 nF capacitor that resonates near 5.033 kHz.
What it means
What is that coil?
The resonant frequency shown assumes a 100 nF capacitor, from f = 1 / (2π√(LC)).

Three things worth knowing
-
Coils resist change, capacitors store it
A capacitor resists a change in voltage; an inductor resists a change in current. Together they make the oscillations behind every radio.
-
Henry beat Faraday to it
Joseph Henry discovered self-inductance around the same time as Faraday but published later. He got the unit; Faraday got capacitance.
-
Saturation ends the maths
Past its rated current an inductor’s core saturates and the inductance collapses. The henries printed on the part only hold below that limit.

Background
About inductance units
Inductance measures how strongly a coil opposes a change in current, in henries. Power supplies use microhenries, mains chokes millihenries, and transformers whole henries.
