Mass flow converter
Convert between kilograms per second, tonnes per hour and pounds per hour: the numbers on pumps, conveyors and process plants.
That's 2.8× as much as a running tap, while a factory conveyor is 18× more. Kept up, that moves about 24 tonnes a day.
What it means
How much is moving?
Mass flow counts weight per time. For liquids you can convert to volume flow if you know the density.

Three things worth knowing
-
t/h to kg/s: divide by 3.6
One tonne per hour is 0.278 kg/s. Going the other way, multiply kg/s by 3.6 for tonnes per hour.
-
Why mass, not volume
Gases expand and liquids swell with heat, so volume changes while mass does not. Weighing the flow is the only figure that stays honest.
-
Mass flow is not volume flow
A kilogram of steam fills a room; a kilogram of water fits in a bottle. Converting between the two always needs the density.

Background
About mass flow units
Process industries measure throughput as mass per time. Engineers use kg/s, plants quote tonnes per hour, and American specifications use pounds per hour.
