Coating weight converter
Convert coating weight into thickness. Pick the coating first: 275 g/m² of zinc is a different thickness from the same weight of paint.
That's about the same as standard galvanized sheet. As zinc, that is about 19.26 µm on each side of a sheet.
What it means
How thick is that coating?
Galvanized sheet is specified by the total weight on both sides, so the coating on each face is half the figure. Thickness readings are per side.

Three things worth knowing
-
Z275 is 19 microns a side
275 g/m² of zinc is 38.5 µm of metal, split between two faces. That is the number a thickness gauge reads.
-
Weight is easier to control
A galvanizing line controls how much zinc it applies by weighing the strip, not by measuring a film. The weight is the process variable; the thickness is the consequence.
-
Both sides or one
Reading a two-sided coating weight as a one-sided thickness doubles your answer. The specification should always say which.

About coating weight
Galvanizers sell coating by weight and inspectors measure it as thickness, so specifications have to cross between them through the density. Zinc is 7.14 g/cm³, so 1 g/m² is 0.14 µm.
The common Z275 grade is 275 g/m² over both faces — about 19 µm on each side.
