Brix converter
Convert between Brix, specific gravity and potential alcohol, the numbers on every hydrometer and refractometer.
That's about the same as fruit juice. Fermented dry, that would give roughly 7.08% ABV.
What it means
How sweet is that?
Refractometer readings drift once fermentation starts, because alcohol bends light differently. Hydrometers stay honest.

Three things worth knowing
-
Brix × 4 ≈ gravity points
12 °Bx is about 1.048 specific gravity, or 48 points. The conversion is a cubic fit, but ×4 gets you close in the shed.
-
Balling, Brix and Plato
Three chemists refined the same sugar table across the 1800s. Winemakers kept Brix, brewers kept Plato, and the scales barely differ.
-
Refractometers lie after fermentation
Once alcohol is present a refractometer reads high. Either switch to a hydrometer or apply a correction formula.

Background
About sugar measures
Brix is grams of sugar per 100 g of liquid. Specific gravity measures density against water instead, which is what a hydrometer floats in. Brewers call the same thing degrees Plato.
