Streaming data usage calculator
Convert a video or music bitrate into how much data it uses, or a data allowance into the bitrate it allows.
That's about the same as HD video. A 100 GB monthly allowance lasts about 44.44 hours at that rate.
What it means
How much data is that?
Decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB), as carriers bill. Services adapt quality to your connection, so real use varies.

Three things worth knowing
-
Mbps × 0.45 = GB/h
5 Mbps ≈ 2.25 GB an hour; 128 kbps ≈ 58 MB an hour.
-
Bits and bytes
Networks count bits, storage counts bytes: 8 bits to a byte, so a 100 Mbps line moves 12.5 MB a second.
-
Mb is not MB
Mbps is megabits per second; MB is megabytes. The difference is a factor of 8.

About streaming data
A stream’s bitrate decides its data use: 1 Mbps for an hour is 450 MB. HD video at about 5 Mbps uses 2.25 GB an hour; 4K at 15–25 Mbps uses 7–11 GB. Music at 320 kbps uses about 144 MB an hour.
