Elastic modulus converter
Convert Young's modulus between metric and US units, and see how much a bar of your material would stretch.
That's about the same as steel. A 1 m bar of 1 cm² under 100 kg would stretch about 0.04905 mm.
What it means
How stiff is that?
Modulus is stiffness, not strength. A stiff material can still be brittle, and a flexible one can be very hard to break.

Three things worth knowing
-
GPa × 0.145 = Mpsi
Steel at 200 GPa is 29 Mpsi. The same factor converts MPa to ksi, which is why both pairs look familiar to engineers.
-
Young, and Euler before him
Thomas Young described the modulus in 1807, though Euler had the idea decades earlier. Young also worked out how the eye focuses and helped decode hieroglyphics.

Stiffness is not strength
Glass is stiffer than nylon but shatters; nylon bends and survives. Modulus tells you how much it moves, not when it breaks.

Background
About Young's modulus
Young's modulus is stress divided by strain: how much force per area it takes to stretch a material by a given fraction. Steel is 200 GPa, aluminum 70, wood 13 and rubber 0.01.
US practice uses Mpsi, millions of pounds per square inch: steel is 29 Mpsi.
