Lumens converter
Convert lumens to kilolumens and candlepower, and see which old filament bulb your figure replaces.
That's about the same as a 60 W bulb. A modern LED would need about 8 W to produce it.
What it means
How much light is that?
Lumens measure total light emitted. How bright a room feels also depends on the area lit, which is measured in lux.

Three things worth knowing
-
Buy lumens, not watts
800 lm replaces a 60 W bulb, 1,600 lm a 100 W one. Watts only tell you the electricity bill, not the light.
-
From candles to the candela
Light was once measured in candlepower, literally against a standard candle. The candela replaced it in 1948 with a definition based on the light from molten platinum.
-
Lumens, lux and candela
Lumens are what the bulb emits, lux what lands on your desk, candela how intense it is in one direction. A torch and a bulb can share lumens and feel nothing alike.

Background
About lumens
A lumen is the total visible light a source emits, weighted for how the eye responds. Shops now print lumens instead of watts, because efficiency varies so much: 800 lm is a traditional 60 W bulb or a modern 8 W LED.
