160°C fan

That's about the same as baking a cake.

What it means

What do you bake at that?

Fan settings are 20 °C or 25 °F below conventional, the usual rule; check your oven manual, as some already adjust. Gas marks follow the British table, rounded to the nearest mark.

About oven temperatures

A fan (convection) oven blows hot air around the food, which cooks it faster, so recipes written for a conventional oven are usually dropped by 20 °C or 25 °F: 180 °C becomes 160 °C fan.

Gas marks run from ¼ to 10: mark 1 is 275 °F (140 °C), and each mark above adds 25 °F. Mark 4, 350 °F or 180 °C, is the classic cake temperature.
